Getting a Holland Lop to Texas

Texas is 1,400 to 1,700 miles from us, 2 to 3 days on the road. We drive it ourselves in a climate-controlled vehicle with regular stops. No depot, no holding facility, no handover between carriers, and never flown or shipped as cargo.

What this breed's size means for the journey. At 2 to 4 lb a Holland Lop travels in a compact carrier with room to turn round and stretch out, which is what you want for a journey of any length. Small enough that the carrier sits in the cab with us rather than in the back.

Texas weather, and this breed

Texas heat and humidity are the real constraint. From May to September we run overnight and keep the vehicle cool the whole way, and we will delay a delivery rather than move a rabbit through a heat advisory.

Holland Lops carry a dense enough coat that heat matters more than cold. Above about 80F they are uncomfortable and above 85F it becomes genuinely risky, which is why the southern runs go overnight.

Holland Lops in Texas, specifically

Texas is our longest hot-weather run and the one we plan hardest. Two days on the road, and from May to September the second leg goes overnight so the rabbit is not sitting in a vehicle through a Panhandle afternoon. We have delayed Texas deliveries by a week for a heat dome and we would do it again.

Once the rabbit is with you, Texas is three different climates and the advice is not the same in each. El Paso is dry and a Holland Lop copes well. Dallas and Austin are hot but manageable indoors. Houston and the Gulf coast are the hard one, because humidity stops the ears working as a radiator, and that is the mechanism this breed depends on.

The practical Texas answer is a frozen water bottle wrapped in a towel in the pen from June onward. A Holland will lie against it and self-regulate, and it costs nothing. The failure mode we hear about from Texas owners is a rabbit kept in a garage with a window unit that trips during a storm, so if that is your setup, have a plan for a power cut in August rather than in the middle of one.

Keeping a Holland Lop in the South

This is the region where a Holland Lop needs the most active management, and we would rather say so. Humid heat defeats a rabbit's cooling because the ears shed heat into air that is already saturated. Above 80F with Southern humidity a Holland is uncomfortable; above 85F it is genuinely at risk. Air conditioning is not a luxury here, it is the reason the rabbit reaches eight.

Size. About 2 to 4 lb full grown, the smallest of the lop breeds. Care. A Holland Lop needs its coat checked rather than groomed: a weekly once-over for mats behind the ears and around the tail is the whole of it. Nails every four to six weeks. They are prone to dental trouble if the hay runs out, so unlimited timothy hay is not optional.

What it gets mistaken for. Most often confused with the Mini Lop, which is a different and noticeably heavier breed rather than a bigger Holland. If a seller uses the two names interchangeably, they are not paying attention. Everything about the Holland Lop.

Finding a rabbit vet in Texas

Do this before the rabbit arrives, not during an emergency. Rabbits are exotics to most practices, and a vet who sees them regularly is a different proposition from one who will. Ring round and ask directly how many rabbits they see in a month.

It matters more than the breed you pick. A Holland Lop with a good local vet does better than any rabbit without one.
