Getting a Holland Lop to North Carolina

North Carolina is 2,300 to 2,600 miles from us, 3 to 4 days on the road. We drive it ourselves in a climate-controlled vehicle with regular stops. No depot, no holding facility, no handover between carriers, and never flown or shipped as cargo.

What this breed's size means for the journey. At 2 to 4 lb a Holland Lop travels in a compact carrier with room to turn round and stretch out, which is what you want for a journey of any length. Small enough that the carrier sits in the cab with us rather than in the back.

The coastal plain gets humid in July and August; the Piedmont and mountains are moderate. We schedule around the eastern half in summer.

Holland Lops carry a dense enough coat that heat matters more than cold. Above about 80F they are uncomfortable and above 85F it becomes genuinely risky, which is why the southern runs go overnight.

Holland Lops in North Carolina, specifically

North Carolina is a three to four day run and one of our more straightforward long deliveries, coming in through the south.

The state gives you three climates. The coastal plain is humid and needs the full summer discipline. The Piedmont around Charlotte and Raleigh is moderate and easy for most of the year. The mountains in the west are cooler again and among the more comfortable places in the south-east to keep a lopped rabbit.

The North Carolina specific is that the Research Triangle and Charlotte both have unusually good access to exotic veterinary care by regional standards, which is worth knowing because it is not true of much of the south-east. If you are in either, you can find a practice that sees rabbits regularly without a long drive, and over a ten-year life that matters more than almost anything else on this page.

If you are on the coast, hurricane season applies the same way it does in South Carolina: a carrier the rabbit will enter without a fight, its paperwork somewhere that is not your house, and enough food to grab on the way out.

Keeping a Holland Lop in the South

This is the region where a Holland Lop needs the most active management, and we would rather say so. Humid heat defeats a rabbit's cooling because the ears shed heat into air that is already saturated. Above 80F with Southern humidity a Holland is uncomfortable; above 85F it is genuinely at risk. Air conditioning is not a luxury here, it is the reason the rabbit reaches eight.

Size. About 2 to 4 lb full grown, the smallest of the lop breeds. Care. A Holland Lop needs its coat checked rather than groomed: a weekly once-over for mats behind the ears and around the tail is the whole of it. Nails every four to six weeks. They are prone to dental trouble if the hay runs out, so unlimited timothy hay is not optional.

What it gets mistaken for. Most often confused with the Mini Lop, which is a different and noticeably heavier breed rather than a bigger Holland. If a seller uses the two names interchangeably, they are not paying attention. Everything about the Holland Lop.

Finding a rabbit vet in North Carolina

Do this before the rabbit arrives, not during an emergency. Rabbits are exotics to most practices, and a vet who sees them regularly is a different proposition from one who will. Ring round and ask directly how many rabbits they see in a month.

It matters more than the breed you pick. A Holland Lop with a good local vet does better than any rabbit without one.
