Getting a Holland Lop to Florida

Florida is 2,400 to 2,700 miles from us, 3 days on the road. We drive it ourselves in a climate-controlled vehicle with regular stops. No depot, no holding facility, no handover between carriers, and never flown or shipped as cargo.

Florida weather, and this breed

Florida heat and humidity are the hardest conditions we deliver into. Summer runs go overnight, the vehicle stays cool the whole way, and we will delay rather than move a rabbit through a heat advisory.

Holland Lops carry a dense enough coat that heat matters more than cold. Above about 80F they are uncomfortable and above 85F it becomes genuinely risky, which is why the southern runs go overnight.

Holland Lops in Florida, specifically

Florida is the hardest climate we send a Holland Lop into and we would far rather say so on this page than after you have paid.

Heat with high humidity, for eight or nine months of the year in the south of the state, is exactly the combination this breed cannot manage. A rabbit sheds heat through its ears into the surrounding air, and Florida air in August is carrying all the moisture it can hold. The mechanism does not work. That is not a caution to bear in mind, it is the central fact of keeping this breed here.

A Holland Lop in Florida is an air-conditioned animal, permanently, and if that is not something your household can commit to then this is the wrong breed and possibly the wrong pet. North Florida around Tallahassee is meaningfully easier than Miami, but not easy.

Given a cooled house, they do perfectly well and there are a great many happy Florida rabbits. The two specifics are hurricane evacuation, which needs a carrier the rabbit will enter willingly, and power cuts, which need frozen bottles ready before the season rather than during it.

Keeping a Holland Lop in the South

This is the region where a Holland Lop needs the most active management, and we would rather say so. Humid heat defeats a rabbit's cooling because the ears shed heat into air that is already saturated. Above 80F with Southern humidity a Holland is uncomfortable; above 85F it is genuinely at risk. Air conditioning is not a luxury here, it is the reason the rabbit reaches eight.

Size. About 2 to 4 lb full grown, the smallest of the lop breeds. Care. A Holland Lop needs its coat checked rather than groomed: a weekly once-over for mats behind the ears and around the tail is the whole of it. Nails every four to six weeks. They are prone to dental trouble if the hay runs out, so unlimited timothy hay is not optional.

What it gets mistaken for. Most often confused with the Mini Lop, which is a different and noticeably heavier breed rather than a bigger Holland. If a seller uses the two names interchangeably, they are not paying attention. Everything about the Holland Lop.

The rabbit is the cheapest part. Housing, a spay or neuter, hay by the bale, pellets and an annual vet visit run well past the purchase price, and Florida buyers should add the delivery on top of that.
