How big they get

Mini Lop Size and Weight

A full grown Mini Lop is four and a half to six and a half pounds. That is roughly double a Holland Lop, and it is the single thing people get wrong about the breed.

A full grown Mini Lop weighs 4.5 to 6.5 lb. Most reach adult weight between six and seven months. The word "mini" is relative to a French Lop at fifteen pounds, not to a rabbit in general.

Growth is fastest between eight and sixteen weeks, which is when people panic that the rabbit is getting big. It is not getting big, it is getting to normal.

How big is a Mini Lop compared to other rabbits?

  • Netherland Dwarf, 1.5 to 2.5 lb. Under half a Mini Lop.
  • Holland Lop, 2 to 4 lb. Roughly half.
  • Mini Lop, 4.5 to 6.5 lb.
  • French Lop, 10 to 15 lb. Two to three times a Mini Lop.

If you want a lop and are choosing on size alone, the Holland Lop against Mini Lop comparison is the one to read.

The naming problem

In the United States, "Mini Lop" is the breed at four and a half to six and a half pounds. In the United Kingdom, the rabbit called a Miniature Lop is a different, smaller animal closer to what Americans call a Holland Lop. If you have read a British care sheet quoting three pounds, that is why the numbers do not match.

There is also no such thing as a teacup or micro Mini Lop. Anything sold under those names is either an ordinary kit that has not finished growing or an undersized runt. The same claim gets made about Holland Lops.

How much space does a Mini Lop need?

A pen at least 4 ft by 2 ft as a base, with several hours a day out of it in a rabbit-proofed room. The pen is where they sleep and eat, not where they live. A five pound rabbit that binkies needs a run-up, and a hutch does not give it one.

Is my Mini Lop overweight?

Weight alone will not tell you, because six pounds is fine on a big-framed doe and heavy on a small buck. Feel along the spine and ribs. You should find them with light pressure and no digging. If the rabbit has a dewlap that touches the floor when it sits, or cannot reach to clean its own back end, it is carrying too much. That is almost always pellets, not hay. The feeding ratio is here.

Common questions

When do Mini Lops stop growing?

Six to seven months for weight. The frame is done a little earlier.

Are Mini Lops bigger than Holland Lops?

Yes, about double. A Holland Lop is 2 to 4 lb, a Mini Lop 4.5 to 6.5 lb.

How big is a full grown Mini Lop rabbit?

Around the size of a small cat, though heavier and more solid than it looks under the coat.

Where these figures come from

Weights and lifespans here are the breed standard and what we see in our own rabbits, not a guarantee about any individual animal. A rabbit is a living thing and it will do what it does. If a breeder gives you an exact adult weight for an eight week old kit, they are guessing.
