Collecting in California
Most California buyers collect. From Bakersfield you are within a straightforward drive of Los Angeles, Fresno, Visalia and most of the Central Valley, and a longer but manageable one from the Bay Area or San Diego. Collection costs you nothing and you get to meet the rabbit before you commit.
We are in Kern County. If you are within a couple of hours, come and collect. It is the simplest version of this for everyone.
What the California climate means for a Holland Lop
You already know what a Central Valley summer does. Bakersfield sits above 100°F for weeks at a stretch, and a Holland Lop is at genuine risk above the mid eighties. Every rabbit we place in California goes to a household that has thought about July, because we live it ourselves.
What California owners should know
California is the only state where most buyers collect rather than ship, and it is worth doing if you can. You meet the rabbit, you see the setup, and you get to ask the questions that come out awkwardly over email. From Bakersfield we are roughly two hours from Fresno, two from Los Angeles, and four from the Bay Area. The state is also one of the better places in the country for exotics veterinary care, particularly around Davis, where the veterinary school has a genuine rabbit specialism.
Common questions
Can I collect a Holland Lop in person in California?
Yes, and most California buyers do. We meet in Bakersfield at a time agreed beforehand. Collection runs on a $100 deposit which is non-refundable and comes off the balance, with the rest in cash when we meet. From Bakersfield you are roughly two hours from Fresno and Los Angeles, and four from the Bay Area.
Can a Holland Lop survive a Central Valley summer?
Indoors with air conditioning, yes, easily. Outdoors, no. Bakersfield sits above 100°F for weeks and a Holland Lop is at genuine risk above the mid eighties. We live here, so this is not a theoretical concern for us.
Before you buy
Two things are worth reading first, and both are the sort of thing a seller would rather you did not think about until after the sale.
- How long they actually live. Seven to fourteen years.
- What the first year actually costs. The rabbit is about a quarter of it.
We do not take money for a litter that does not exist yet, and there is no waiting list. If nothing here suits you today, check back rather than pay to hold a place. More on how we work.
