At 2 to 4 lb a Holland Lop travels in a compact carrier with room to turn round and stretch out, which is what you want for a journey of any length. Small enough that the carrier sits in the cab with us rather than in the back.

For the longer runs to the Bay Area or San Diego we drive to you, leaving early to clear the Central Valley before the afternoon heat.

For buyers further out we drive, and the Central Valley heat sets the timing. A summer run to the Bay Area or San Diego leaves before dawn so the rabbit is not crossing the valley floor at three in the afternoon.

California's own climates differ more than most states'. Coastal LA and the Bay are mild enough that a Holland Lop needs almost nothing. The Central Valley from Bakersfield to Redding is genuinely hot for four months and needs the same cooling discipline we would give a Texas buyer. The desert south is hotter still.

The California specific worth naming is wildfire smoke. On bad air-quality days keep the rabbit indoors with the windows shut. A rabbit's respiratory system is more sensitive than yours and it cannot tell you it is struggling.

Keeping a Holland Lop in the Pacific coast

The mildest region we deliver into and the easiest on this breed. A Holland Lop in coastal California or western Oregon rarely meets a temperature that troubles it. The one thing worth watching is damp: persistent wet air can encourage ear and coat problems in a lopped breed, so an indoor pen away from a draughty exterior wall is worth more here than extra ventilation.

Size. About 2 to 4 lb full grown, the smallest of the lop breeds. Care. A Holland Lop needs its coat checked rather than groomed: a weekly once-over for mats behind the ears and around the tail is the whole of it. Nails every four to six weeks. They are prone to dental trouble if the hay runs out, so unlimited timothy hay is not optional.

What it gets mistaken for. Most often confused with the Mini Lop, which is a different and noticeably heavier breed rather than a bigger Holland. If a seller uses the two names interchangeably, they are not paying attention. Everything about the Holland Lop.

Buying at a distance, honestly

You cannot walk in and look, so the questions matter more. Ask for a video call with the rabbit before you send anything. Ask what happens if it does not work out. Ask how many litters we run a year and you will get a number rather than a change of subject.

We would rather answer all three now than have a Holland Lop come back from California at six months.
