Getting a Holland Lop to Nevada

Nevada is 300 to 500 miles from us, 1 day on the road. We drive it ourselves in a climate-controlled vehicle with regular stops. No depot, no holding facility, no handover between carriers, and never flown or shipped as cargo.

What this breed's size means for the journey. At 2 to 4 lb a Holland Lop travels in a compact carrier with room to turn round and stretch out, which is what you want for a journey of any length. Small enough that the carrier sits in the cab with us rather than in the back.

Nevada weather, and this breed

A short run over the Tehachapis and out. Las Vegas summers are the constraint rather than the distance, so July and August deliveries leave before dawn.

Holland Lops carry a dense enough coat that heat matters more than cold. Above about 80F they are uncomfortable and above 85F it becomes genuinely risky, which is why the southern runs go overnight.

Holland Lops in Nevada, specifically

Nevada is a straightforward run up through the desert and one of our shorter ones, which makes summer timing easier to arrange around than it is for the long hauls.

Las Vegas and Reno are two entirely different propositions for a rabbit. Las Vegas summers are among the hardest conditions in the country, hotter than Phoenix on the worst days and staying hot deep into the night, which matters because the overnight cool-down is what a rabbit relies on to recover. Reno is high desert at four and a half thousand feet with real winters and comfortable summers, and a Holland Lop there needs very little management.

The Las Vegas specific is that a great deal of the housing is newer construction with good air conditioning, which genuinely helps, and that a power cut in August is the scenario worth having a plan for. A frozen water bottle wrapped in a towel buys you hours.

Nevada is dry, so the ear problems that damp climates cause in lopped breeds are rare here. Watch the water intake instead: it is much higher than owners moving from a wetter state expect.

Keeping a Holland Lop in the desert Southwest

Dry heat is easier on a Holland Lop than humid heat, because a rabbit sheds heat through its ears and that works far better in dry air. What the Southwest does demand is water: a Holland drinks more here than the same rabbit would in Ohio, and a bottle that empties by mid-afternoon needs replacing with two. Frozen water bottles wrapped in a towel are the standard summer trick and they work.

Size. About 2 to 4 lb full grown, the smallest of the lop breeds. Care. A Holland Lop needs its coat checked rather than groomed: a weekly once-over for mats behind the ears and around the tail is the whole of it. Nails every four to six weeks. They are prone to dental trouble if the hay runs out, so unlimited timothy hay is not optional.

What it gets mistaken for. Most often confused with the Mini Lop, which is a different and noticeably heavier breed rather than a bigger Holland. If a seller uses the two names interchangeably, they are not paying attention. Everything about the Holland Lop.
