Almost every page about Holland Lop price answers the wrong question. It tells you what the rabbit costs and stops there, which is like telling someone a car costs $8,000 and not mentioning insurance, fuel or tyres.

So here is the whole thing, including the parts breeders do not usually volunteer.

Our price is $300 to $400. That is the whole range and there is nothing above it. Colour does not move it, sex does not move it, and there is no premium for a rabbit that happens to photograph well.

What makes one Holland Lop cost more than another?

Colour

This is the big one, and most breeders charge for it. Common torts sit at the bottom of the range. Blue eyed white, magpie, tri colour and clean broken patterns carry a premium because they are genuinely hard to produce reliably, not because the rabbit is any better.

Pedigree

A three generation pedigree adds cost. It is only meaningful if you intend to show or breed. If you want a pet, you are paying for paperwork you will never open.

Sex

Does often price slightly higher, because buyers assume they are gentler. In practice a neutered buck is frequently the calmer animal, so people routinely pay a premium for the wrong reason.

Transport

Shipping a rabbit across the country typically adds $150 to $400 depending on the route. Most breeders quote by mileage. We book transport ourselves and quote the exact cost for your route before you commit to anything.

A realistic figure is $1,100 to $1,900. Every year after that runs about $500 to $800, assuming nothing goes wrong. A rabbit emergency such as GI stasis runs $300 to $1,500 and it is not a rare event.

Why the spay is not optional

The House Rabbit Society reports that unspayed female rabbits face a 40 to 80 percent risk of uterine, ovarian or mammary cancer depending on age. Spaying eliminates it.

So the $250 to $500 is not a nice-to-have. It is the difference between a doe who lives four years and one who lives twelve. It is the highest return money you will spend on the animal, and it costs more than the rabbit. More on lifespan here.

Is a cheap Holland Lop a bad idea?

Usually, yes, and not for snobbish reasons.

A $40 rabbit is frequently under six weeks old, which is too young to leave its mother and is the most common cause of a bunny that dies in its first fortnight. It is often not a Holland Lop at all. It comes with no history, no idea what it has been eating, and nobody to ask when it stops eating at nine at night.

The saving disappears the first time you are at an emergency vet, and it disappears permanently if the rabbit does not make it.
