How big they get

French Lop Size and Weight

Ten to fifteen pounds, which is the weight of a small dog. This is the thing to be certain about before you commit, because a French Lop does not fit the setup most people buy.

A full grown French Lop weighs 10 to 15 lb and is still filling out at ten months. They are one of the largest domestic rabbit breeds, and they need floor space rather than a bigger cage.

An eight week old French Lop already weighs what an adult Holland Lop weighs. People see a kit the size of a grown rabbit and still underestimate where it ends up.

What "giant French Lop" means

Usually nothing. The French Lop is already among the largest breeds, so giant French Lop, giant French Lop eared rabbit and similar phrases almost always describe this breed rather than a separate one. The genuinely larger animal is the Flemish Giant, a different breed we do not keep.

Compared with the other breeds here

  • Netherland Dwarf, 1.5 to 2.5 lb
  • Holland Lop, 2 to 4 lb
  • Mini Lop, 4.5 to 6.5 lb
  • French Lop, 10 to 15 lb, so three to seven times the others

The Holland Lop against French Lop comparison covers which suits which household.

The space they actually need

A pen of at least 6 ft by 3 ft as a base, with a rabbit-proofed room to spend real time in. Standard pet shop cages, carriers and litter trays are all too small: buy the largest of everything, and buy a cat carrier or a small dog crate rather than a rabbit carrier.

Floor surface matters more at this weight. Wire floors cause sore hocks quickly in a heavy rabbit, so solid washable flooring throughout.

Everything scales with the rabbit

Food, bedding, litter and vet costs are all higher than for a small breed, and anaesthetic and medication are dosed by weight. If budget is a live consideration, what a French Lop costs across the first year sets it out honestly. The rabbit itself is the small part.

Where these figures come from

Weights and lifespans here are the breed standard and what we see in our own rabbits, not a guarantee about any individual animal. A rabbit is a living thing and it will do what it does. If a breeder gives you an exact adult weight for an eight week old kit, they are guessing.
