Getting a Holland Lop to Michigan

Michigan is 2,200 to 2,400 miles from us, 3 days on the road. We drive it ourselves in a climate-controlled vehicle with regular stops. No depot, no holding facility, no handover between carriers, and never flown or shipped as cargo.

What this breed's size means for the journey. At 2 to 4 lb a Holland Lop travels in a compact carrier with room to turn round and stretch out, which is what you want for a journey of any length. Small enough that the carrier sits in the cab with us rather than in the back.

Michigan weather, and this breed

Michigan winters are long and snowy, more so in the Upper Peninsula. We watch the weather closely for winter deliveries and will move travel if heavy snow or extreme cold is forecast along the route.

Holland Lops carry a dense enough coat that heat matters more than cold. Above about 80F they are uncomfortable and above 85F it becomes genuinely risky, which is why the southern runs go overnight.

Holland Lops in Michigan, specifically

Michigan is a three-day run and lake-effect snow across the state is what moves a winter date, more so the further north you are.

For the rabbit, a Michigan winter is easy. A Holland Lop indoors is comfortable through a Detroit or Grand Rapids January without any special provision. The summers are short and only occasionally humid enough to need managing.

The Michigan specific is the length of the indoor season and what it does to a bored rabbit. From November through April a house rabbit here is not going outside, and a pen that is adequate for a fortnight is not adequate for six months. Give it substantially more floor than seems necessary and change what is in there every week or two. Cardboard, untreated willow, a paper bag stuffed with hay: none of it costs anything and all of it prevents the chewing that owners mistake for bad behaviour.

The Upper Peninsula is a different proposition again, colder and more remote, and veterinary access up there is genuinely limited. If you are in the UP, establish which practice sees rabbits before the rabbit arrives.

Keeping a Holland Lop in the Midwest

Four real seasons and a breed that handles all of them, provided the transitions are managed. The Midwest failure mode is a rabbit kept in an unheated garage where the water bottle freezes overnight in January and nobody notices for two days. A Holland Lop copes with cold and does not cope with no water.

Size. About 2 to 4 lb full grown, the smallest of the lop breeds. Care. A Holland Lop needs its coat checked rather than groomed: a weekly once-over for mats behind the ears and around the tail is the whole of it. Nails every four to six weeks. They are prone to dental trouble if the hay runs out, so unlimited timothy hay is not optional.

What it gets mistaken for. Most often confused with the Mini Lop, which is a different and noticeably heavier breed rather than a bigger Holland. If a seller uses the two names interchangeably, they are not paying attention. Everything about the Holland Lop.
