Getting a Holland Lop to Minnesota

Minnesota is 1,800 to 2,000 miles from us, 2 to 3 days on the road. We drive it ourselves in a climate-controlled vehicle with regular stops. No depot, no holding facility, no handover between carriers, and never flown or shipped as cargo.

What this breed's size means for the journey. At 2 to 4 lb a Holland Lop travels in a compact carrier with room to turn round and stretch out, which is what you want for a journey of any length. Small enough that the carrier sits in the cab with us rather than in the back.

Minnesota winters are genuinely severe. A rabbit copes with cold far better than heat, but we still avoid deep-winter runs when the forecast is below zero along the route.

Holland Lops carry a dense enough coat that heat matters more than cold. Above about 80F they are uncomfortable and above 85F it becomes genuinely risky, which is why the southern runs go overnight.

Holland Lops in Minnesota, specifically

Minnesota is a genuinely cold-weather delivery and we schedule around it rather than through it. Between December and February we watch the forecast along the I-90 corridor and will move a date rather than take a rabbit through a whiteout. The cold itself is not the issue; a stopped vehicle in a storm is.

For the rabbit, a Minnesota winter is easier than a Texas summer by a wide margin. A Holland Lop grows a proper coat and is comfortable indoors at normal house temperature all winter. The two things that catch Minnesota owners are the water bottle freezing in an unheated porch or garage, which happens faster than people expect, and the sheer length of the indoor season.

That second one matters more than it sounds. From November to April a Minnesota house rabbit is not going outside, and a pen that is adequate for a week is not adequate for five months. Give it more floor than you think it needs and rotate what is in there. A bored Holland Lop chews baseboards, and it is not being difficult, it is being under-occupied.

Keeping a Holland Lop in the Midwest

Four real seasons and a breed that handles all of them, provided the transitions are managed. The Midwest failure mode is a rabbit kept in an unheated garage where the water bottle freezes overnight in January and nobody notices for two days. A Holland Lop copes with cold and does not cope with no water.

Size. About 2 to 4 lb full grown, the smallest of the lop breeds. Care. A Holland Lop needs its coat checked rather than groomed: a weekly once-over for mats behind the ears and around the tail is the whole of it. Nails every four to six weeks. They are prone to dental trouble if the hay runs out, so unlimited timothy hay is not optional.

What it gets mistaken for. Most often confused with the Mini Lop, which is a different and noticeably heavier breed rather than a bigger Holland. If a seller uses the two names interchangeably, they are not paying attention. Everything about the Holland Lop.
