How long they live

Netherland Dwarf Lifespan

Ten to twelve years, and often longer than the bigger breeds. Small rabbits tend to outlive large ones, and this is the smallest breed we keep.

A Netherland Dwarf lives 10 to 12 years, sometimes more. Indoors, neutered and fed mostly hay is what gets them there. It is a longer commitment than most people expect from a two pound animal.

Why they live longer than bigger breeds

Across rabbits, smaller breeds generally live longer, the same pattern seen in dogs. A Netherland Dwarf at ten to twelve years will usually outlast a French Lop, which as a very large rabbit tends toward the shorter end.

What decides it

  • Indoors. Not negotiable at this size. A two pound rabbit loses heat and overheats far faster than a larger one, and an outdoor dwarf is exposed at both ends.
  • Neutering. Unspayed does face a high uterine cancer risk by middle age. This is the single biggest preventable cause of early death.
  • Teeth. The flat face that gives the breed its look also makes dental problems more common. Unlimited hay is the main defence.
  • Being watched. A small rabbit has less reserve. A dwarf that stops eating deteriorates faster than a French Lop that stops eating.

The dwarfing gene

The breed carries a dwarfing gene, and a kit inheriting two copies does not survive. This is normal breed genetics rather than anything unusual, and it is why Netherland Dwarf litters are small and why our list of available dwarfs is often shorter than the others. It does not affect the lifespan of a healthy kit.

Dental problems, specifically

The short flat head means less room for teeth that never stop growing. Malocclusion, where teeth do not meet and so do not wear down, shows up more in this breed than in the lops. Signs are dropping food, drooling, a wet chin, or eating pellets while ignoring hay. Caught early it is managed. Ignored it becomes the thing that ends a rabbit's life early.

Common questions

How long do Netherland Dwarf rabbits live as pets?

Ten to twelve years indoors, less if kept outside.

Do Netherland Dwarfs live longer than Holland Lops?

Usually a little, though the ranges overlap heavily. Care matters more than breed.

Where these figures come from

Weights and lifespans here are the breed standard and what we see in our own rabbits, not a guarantee about any individual animal. A rabbit is a living thing and it will do what it does. If a breeder gives you an exact adult weight for an eight week old kit, they are guessing.
