Holland Lop Size: How Big Do Holland Lops Get?

Size is the thing buyers get wrong most often, and it is usually because of the names. The Holland Lop is small. The Mini Lop is not. We will come back to that.

For a sense of scale: a Holland Lop is about the size of a guinea pig with much longer ears, or roughly a bag of sugar with a personality.

The "mini Holland Lop" problem

When a seller advertises a "mini Holland Lop" and charges more for it, one of three things is happening. They do not know the breeds. They are using a word they think sounds appealing. Or they are deliberately implying a rarity that does not exist.

None of those three is a person you want to buy an animal from. It is a small thing, but it tells you what else they might be relaxed about.

What about a runt?

Litters do produce smaller bunnies, and a genuinely small Holland Lop exists. But it is not a different breed, it should not cost more, and it is worth asking why it is small. Sometimes it is nothing. Sometimes it is a rabbit that did not thrive.

Holland Lop vs Mini Lop size

The names are backwards from what you would expect, and this catches almost every first-time buyer.

The Holland Lop weighs 2 to 4 pounds. The Mini Lop weighs 4.5 to 6.5 pounds. Despite the name, the Mini Lop is the bigger rabbit, frequently by double.

If a rabbit sold to you as a Holland Lop grows past five pounds, it was very likely a Mini Lop, or a cross. That is not a disaster, it is still a lovely rabbit, but you paid for one thing and got another.

How much space does a rabbit this size need?

More than the size suggests. A 3 pound rabbit still needs a minimum of 12 square feet of pen plus daily run time outside it.

Small does not mean sedentary. Holland Lops binky, which is a full-body twisting leap, and they need the room to do it. A rabbit that cannot move properly gets fat and gets sore hocks.

Is my Holland Lop overweight?

Common, and it is almost always too many pellets.

• Feel the ribs. You should be able to feel them with light pressure. If you have to press, the rabbit is overweight. If you can see them, it is underweight.
• Look from above. There should be a visible waist behind the ribs.
• Watch the cecotropes. A rabbit too fat to reach its own back end leaves squashed sticky clusters around the pen. That is a weight problem, not a hygiene one.
• Over 4.5 lb is overweight or not a purebred Holland Lop.

Common questions

Do Holland Lops stay small?

Yes. They are full grown at 2 to 4 pounds and they stay there. They do not have a growth spurt at a year.

Are bucks or does bigger?

Barely different in this breed. Does often carry a dewlap, the fold of skin under the chin, which can make them look heavier than they are.

How long do Holland Lops live at this size?
