Getting a Holland Lop to Oregon

Oregon is 650 to 900 miles from us, 2 days on the road. We drive it ourselves in a climate-controlled vehicle with regular stops. No depot, no holding facility, no handover between carriers, and never flown or shipped as cargo.

What this breed's size means for the journey. At 2 to 4 lb a Holland Lop travels in a compact carrier with room to turn round and stretch out, which is what you want for a journey of any length. Small enough that the carrier sits in the cab with us rather than in the back.

Oregon weather, and this breed

The run up the I-5 corridor is straightforward most of the year. Winter deliveries over the Siskiyou pass occasionally shift by a day if the pass closes.

Holland Lops carry a dense enough coat that heat matters more than cold. Above about 80F they are uncomfortable and above 85F it becomes genuinely risky, which is why the southern runs go overnight.

Holland Lops in Oregon, specifically

Oregon is a two-day run up through Nevada and over the Siskiyou pass, and that pass in winter is the one variable. Otherwise it is among our more comfortable deliveries.

Western Oregon is close to an ideal climate for a Holland Lop. Portland and the Willamette Valley are mild enough that a rabbit needs almost no seasonal management at all, and the summers are short and rarely severe. Eastern Oregon, Bend and beyond, is high desert and behaves quite differently: hotter days, colder nights, much drier.

The specifically western Oregon caution is damp over a long wet winter. A lopped ear does not get the airflow an upright ear does, and months of persistent moisture can encourage wax build-up and ear problems that an upright-eared breed would shrug off. It is easy to stay ahead of: look inside both ears once a week and get any build-up or head-shaking seen early rather than watching it.

Ventilation matters more than warmth here. A dry, airy room beats a warm stuffy one for this breed in this climate, every time.

Keeping a Holland Lop in the Pacific coast

The mildest region we deliver into and the easiest on this breed. A Holland Lop in coastal California or western Oregon rarely meets a temperature that troubles it. The one thing worth watching is damp: persistent wet air can encourage ear and coat problems in a lopped breed, so an indoor pen away from a draughty exterior wall is worth more here than extra ventilation.

Size. About 2 to 4 lb full grown, the smallest of the lop breeds. Care. A Holland Lop needs its coat checked rather than groomed: a weekly once-over for mats behind the ears and around the tail is the whole of it. Nails every four to six weeks. They are prone to dental trouble if the hay runs out, so unlimited timothy hay is not optional.

What it gets mistaken for. Most often confused with the Mini Lop, which is a different and noticeably heavier breed rather than a bigger Holland. If a seller uses the two names interchangeably, they are not paying attention. Everything about the Holland Lop.
