Getting a Holland Lop to Idaho

Idaho is 750 to 950 miles from us, 1 to 2 days on the road. We drive it ourselves in a climate-controlled vehicle with regular stops. No depot, no holding facility, no handover between carriers, and never flown or shipped as cargo.

What this breed's size means for the journey. At 2 to 4 lb a Holland Lop travels in a compact carrier with room to turn round and stretch out, which is what you want for a journey of any length. Small enough that the carrier sits in the cab with us rather than in the back.

Idaho weather, and this breed

An easy summer run up through Nevada. Winter over the higher ground occasionally adds a day.

Holland Lops carry a dense enough coat that heat matters more than cold. Above about 80F they are uncomfortable and above 85F it becomes genuinely risky, which is why the southern runs go overnight.

Holland Lops in Idaho, specifically

Idaho is a one to two day run depending on where you are, and it is one of our easier long deliveries outside of winter over the higher passes.

The climate suits a Holland Lop well. Boise and the Treasure Valley are hot and dry in summer, which a rabbit handles far better than hot and humid, and the winters are cold without being extreme. North Idaho is snowier and colder and still not a problem for a rabbit indoors.

Two Idaho specifics. Summer smoke has become a real seasonal factor across the western states, and a rabbit's respiratory system is more sensitive than a person's; on genuinely bad air-quality days keep the rabbit indoors with the windows shut, the same as you would a child with asthma. And veterinary access varies enormously across the state: the Boise area is well served for exotics, while much of the panhandle and the east is not. Find out which practice sees rabbits and how far it is before you need it, because that drive is the one you will not want to be discovering at short notice.

Keeping a Holland Lop in the Mountain West

Altitude itself does not bother a Holland Lop, but the temperature swing does: a Front Range day can move forty degrees between afternoon and midnight. Keep the pen away from a window that bakes at four and chills at nine. Winter is a non-event for a rabbit with a proper coat, and this breed grows one.

Size. About 2 to 4 lb full grown, the smallest of the lop breeds. Care. A Holland Lop needs its coat checked rather than groomed: a weekly once-over for mats behind the ears and around the tail is the whole of it. Nails every four to six weeks. They are prone to dental trouble if the hay runs out, so unlimited timothy hay is not optional.

What it gets mistaken for. Most often confused with the Mini Lop, which is a different and noticeably heavier breed rather than a bigger Holland. If a seller uses the two names interchangeably, they are not paying attention. Everything about the Holland Lop.

You may well find one closer, and if they raise the rabbits indoors and will show you the parents then distance is a poor reason to rule them out.
