Getting a Holland Lop to Georgia

Georgia is 2,200 to 2,400 miles from us, 3 days on the road. We drive it ourselves in a climate-controlled vehicle with regular stops. No depot, no holding facility, no handover between carriers, and never flown or shipped as cargo.

Georgia humidity through the summer means overnight travel and a cool vehicle the whole way. Winters are mild and give the easiest run of the year.

Holland Lops carry a dense enough coat that heat matters more than cold. Above about 80F they are uncomfortable and above 85F it becomes genuinely risky, which is why the southern runs go overnight.

Holland Lops in Georgia, specifically

Georgia is a three-day run coming in through the south, and from May through September the last leg travels overnight. Atlanta traffic decides the handover time more than the distance does, so we agree a point and a window rather than a door and an hour.

The climate needs managing for about five months. Georgia humidity is the constraint rather than the temperature, for the same reason it is everywhere on the Gulf side: saturated air stops a rabbit's ears working as a radiator. Above 80F with Georgia humidity a Holland Lop is uncomfortable, and above 85F it needs cooling rather than watching.

North Georgia around the mountains is a different proposition and noticeably easier than Savannah or Macon. The Georgia point specific to this breed is that pine straw is the common local bedding and it is not a good choice for a rabbit: aromatic softwoods can cause respiratory irritation. Use a paper-based bedding or kiln-dried aspen instead. It is a small thing and it is the local habit most likely to cause a problem that nobody connects to its cause.

Keeping a Holland Lop in the South

This is the region where a Holland Lop needs the most active management, and we would rather say so. Humid heat defeats a rabbit's cooling because the ears shed heat into air that is already saturated. Above 80F with Southern humidity a Holland is uncomfortable; above 85F it is genuinely at risk. Air conditioning is not a luxury here, it is the reason the rabbit reaches eight.

Size. About 2 to 4 lb full grown, the smallest of the lop breeds. Care. A Holland Lop needs its coat checked rather than groomed: a weekly once-over for mats behind the ears and around the tail is the whole of it. Nails every four to six weeks. They are prone to dental trouble if the hay runs out, so unlimited timothy hay is not optional.

What it gets mistaken for. Most often confused with the Mini Lop, which is a different and noticeably heavier breed rather than a bigger Holland. If a seller uses the two names interchangeably, they are not paying attention. Everything about the Holland Lop.

Buck or doe, for a Georgia household

A more consequential decision than colour and one most buyers leave to chance. Bucks tend to be steadier and more affectionate once neutered; does are often more independent and can be territorial about their space before spaying.
