Getting a Holland Lop to Oklahoma

Oklahoma is 1,300 to 1,550 miles from us, 2 to 3 days on the road. We drive it ourselves in a climate-controlled vehicle with regular stops. No depot, no holding facility, no handover between carriers, and never flown or shipped as cargo.

What this breed's size means for the journey. At 2 to 4 lb a Holland Lop travels in a compact carrier with room to turn round and stretch out, which is what you want for a journey of any length. Small enough that the carrier sits in the cab with us rather than in the back.

Spring storm season is the variable, and summer heat means the last leg runs at night.

Holland Lops carry a dense enough coat that heat matters more than cold. Above about 80F they are uncomfortable and above 85F it becomes genuinely risky, which is why the southern runs go overnight.

Holland Lops in Oklahoma, specifically

Oklahoma is a two to three day run and spring is the season that moves dates. Storm systems cross the state fast and we would rather wait a day than drive through one.

The climate gives a Holland Lop both extremes. Summers are hot and humid enough to need real management from June through September, less severe than the Gulf coast but not by a wide margin. Winters are cold, short and windy.

The Oklahoma specific is the wind and the storm season together. If you are on a rural property, a summer power cut is a genuine risk to a rabbit rather than an inconvenience, because a cooled house that stops being cooled becomes a hot box quickly. Frozen bottles in the freezer as standard, and if you have a generator, know that the rabbit is on the list of things it is for.

The other local point is that outdoor hutches are common here and we would ask you not to use one. An Oklahoma summer is dangerous for a lopped rabbit outdoors even in shade, and every rabbit we raise lives indoors.

Keeping a Holland Lop in the Great Plains

Wind is the plains problem nobody warns you about. A Holland Lop is small enough that a genuine draught across a pen chills it faster than the thermometer suggests, so siting matters more here than insulation does. Summer storms also mean a rabbit that lives in a garage or outbuilding needs a plan for a power cut in August.

Size. About 2 to 4 lb full grown, the smallest of the lop breeds. Care. A Holland Lop needs its coat checked rather than groomed: a weekly once-over for mats behind the ears and around the tail is the whole of it. Nails every four to six weeks. They are prone to dental trouble if the hay runs out, so unlimited timothy hay is not optional.

What it gets mistaken for. Most often confused with the Mini Lop, which is a different and noticeably heavier breed rather than a bigger Holland. If a seller uses the two names interchangeably, they are not paying attention. Everything about the Holland Lop.

Buying at a distance, honestly

You cannot walk in and look, so the questions matter more. Ask for a video call with the rabbit before you send anything. Ask what happens if it does not work out. Ask how many litters we run a year and you will get a number rather than a change of subject.
