South Dakota is a three-day run and the plains weather decides the date, as it does across this whole band of the country. A winter storm can move it by a day and we would rather that than take a rabbit into stopped traffic on I-90.

The state divides at the Missouri. East river around Sioux Falls is farmland and humid in summer; west river toward Rapid City and the Black Hills is drier and higher. The western half is the easier of the two for a lopped breed, for the usual reason: dry air lets the ears do their job.

The South Dakota specific worth naming is the wind, which is constant rather than occasional and reaches a small animal through gaps that would not trouble a dog. Site the pen on an interior wall and away from any exterior door.

Hay is a local advantage here, as it is across the plains. Good grass hay is available by the bale far more cheaply than pet-shop bags, and hay should be most of what a rabbit eats. Store it dry and off the floor.

Wind is the plains problem nobody warns you about. A Holland Lop is small enough that a genuine draught across a pen chills it faster than the thermometer suggests, so siting matters more here than insulation does. Summer storms also mean a rabbit that lives in a garage or outbuilding needs a plan for a power cut in August.

Size. About 2 to 4 lb full grown, the smallest of the lop breeds. Care. A Holland Lop needs its coat checked rather than groomed: a weekly once-over for mats behind the ears and around the tail is the whole of it. Nails every four to six weeks. They are prone to dental trouble if the hay runs out, so unlimited timothy hay is not optional.
