A Mini Lop Rabbit from our house to your door in Arizona. That is the short version. The longer one: we are Arlen Rabbitry in Bakersfield, California, the ground run is done by a USDA certified pet transport service in a climate-controlled vehicle, and nothing we send is ever flown or shipped as cargo. Collection from Bakersfield is welcome any day you can get here. $200 for bucks and does alike.

What happens between here and Arizona

It starts with a message: which bunny, and where in Arizona. We price that run for your address and come back with a date, and the date is chosen by the weather on the route rather than by what is convenient.

Then a USDA certified pet transport service takes over the ground leg. They do this for a living, in a climate-controlled vehicle, with regular stops for water and a look at the animal. There is no flight involved at any point and your bunny never travels as cargo.

They hand your bunny to you at your door, in person, and you will have heard from us while it was on the road rather than only at the end.

Arizona: the timings

Two days is the floor for anywhere, and Arizona sits at 1 day because it is 450 to 600 miles of road from Bakersfield. That figure already includes the stops and the overnight breaks; it is not a straight-line estimate. Arizona summers are the reason we travel at night for June through September deliveries. A rabbit does not tolerate heat the way it tolerates cold, and above 85F we move the run rather than risk it.

Driving out instead? It is about 8 to 10 hours at the wheel, a long day each way. Worth it for a lot of people, because you get to handle the whole litter before you decide and your bunny travels home with you rather than with anybody else. There is no charge for collecting.

Getting a Mini Lop to Arizona

Arizona is 450 to 600 miles from us, 1 day on the road. The run is handled by a USDA certified pet transport service, in a climate-controlled vehicle with regular stops for water and a check. Your bunny goes by road the whole way: never flown, and never shipped as cargo.

What this breed's size means for the journey. At 4.5 to 6.5 lb a Mini Lop needs a larger carrier than a Holland and more airflow around it. Not a difficulty, just a bigger box and one more stop on a long run.

Arizona weather, and this breed

Arizona summers are the reason we travel at night for June through September deliveries. A rabbit does not tolerate heat the way it tolerates cold, and above 85F we move the run rather than risk it.

The denser body holds heat longer than a Holland Lop does, so a Mini Lop is the one we are most careful with on a summer run. Overnight travel from May onward, without exception.

Mini Lops in Arizona, specifically

Arizona treats a Mini Lop better than its reputation suggests, because dry heat and humid heat are entirely different problems for a rabbit. The ears shed heat efficiently into dry desert air, and this breed has plenty of ear to do it with.

That said, five to six and a half pounds is a lot of rabbit to cool, and a Phoenix or Tucson July still demands a cooled room and a great deal more water than owners moving from a wetter state expect. Use a heavy bowl rather than a bottle and refill it twice daily.

The Arizona caution specific to this breed is the swamp cooler. Evaporative cooling works well in the desert and it raises indoor humidity while doing so, which removes precisely the advantage the dry climate was giving you. If your house runs one, keep the Mini Lop in the room it reaches least, or use refrigerated air in that room.

Flagstaff and the high country are a different state and genuinely comfortable for this breed year round.

Keeping a Mini Lop in the desert Southwest

A Mini Lop carries more body than a Holland and holds heat longer, which makes the Southwest summer a real consideration rather than a caution. Dry air helps, and the ears do their job well in it, but a 6lb rabbit in a Phoenix garage in July is a serious risk. Indoors, cooled, with more water than you expect.

Size. 4.5 to 6.5 lb full grown, noticeably heavier than a Holland Lop. Care. The heavier body means nails wear less and need cutting more often, roughly monthly. Watch the weight: a Mini Lop will happily eat past what it needs, and an overweight rabbit cannot groom its own back end properly, which causes real problems.

What it gets mistaken for. Frequently sold as a Holland Lop by people who do not know the difference, and the two are not interchangeable: a Mini Lop is roughly twice the weight. Ask for the adult weight of both parents. Everything about the Mini Lop.

Same journey, same price, different rabbit. Worth comparing before the distance matters.

Housing a Mini Lop indoors

Every rabbit we raise lives indoors and we would ask that yours does too. A hutch at the bottom of a Arizona garden is a shorter, lonelier life, and this is a companion animal that does badly kept at a distance.

Floor space beats cage height every time. 4.5 to 6.5 lb full grown, noticeably heavier than a Holland Lop, so size the pen off that rather than off what a pet shop sells.
