The breed

Netherland Dwarf Size and Weight

One and a half to two and a half pounds grown. The smallest rabbit we raise, and smaller than most people picture.

A full grown Netherland Dwarf weighs 1.5 to 2.5 lb. That is roughly half a Holland Lop and about a sixth of a French Lop, and it is small enough that most people are genuinely surprised when they meet one.

They finish growing earlier than the larger breeds, with most of the adult size reached by five months.

Telling a Dwarf from a young Holland Lop

This is the single most common confusion, and it is an honest one: a Holland Lop at eight weeks is about the adult size of a Netherland Dwarf. People buy what they think is a tiny rabbit and watch it double.

The ears settle it. A Netherland Dwarf's ears stand upright and are short, often under two inches. A Holland Lop's fall down against the head. Ear carriage is set by the breed and is obvious from a few weeks old, so if you can see the rabbit or a clear photograph of its head, you can tell. Ask for the adult weight of both parents as well: that is the best single predictor of where a kit will finish.

What small actually means day to day

  • Less space, but not no space. They still want a proper pen and daily run time. A tiny rabbit in a tiny cage is still a rabbit in a tiny cage.
  • Faster to chill and faster to overheat. Low body mass means a Dwarf changes temperature quicker than a larger rabbit. Site the pen on an interior wall, away from draughts and direct sun.
  • Dehydration comes on faster. A heavy bowl of water, checked twice a day, matters more for this breed than for any other we sell.
  • They travel easily. The smallest of the four is also the one that minds a journey least.
