Getting a Holland Lop to West Virginia

West Virginia is 2,200 to 2,500 miles from us, 3 to 4 days on the road. We drive it ourselves in a climate-controlled vehicle with regular stops. No depot, no holding facility, no handover between carriers, and never flown or shipped as cargo.

What this breed's size means for the journey. At 2 to 4 lb a Holland Lop travels in a compact carrier with room to turn round and stretch out, which is what you want for a journey of any length. Small enough that the carrier sits in the cab with us rather than in the back.

Mountain roads in winter are the variable here. Cold itself is not a problem for a rabbit.

Holland Lops carry a dense enough coat that heat matters more than cold. Above about 80F they are uncomfortable and above 85F it becomes genuinely risky, which is why the southern runs go overnight.

Holland Lops in West Virginia, specifically

The mountains are the whole story for a West Virginia delivery. Our route comes in through the Ohio valley rather than over the ridges, because a switchback road with a rabbit in the back is slower and rougher than the map suggests, and we would rather add an hour than put a carrier through it. Winter closes that calculation down further: an ice event on US-19 moves a date, and we will tell you that is the reason rather than inventing a vaguer one.

The state's housing works in a Holland Lop's favour. A great deal of West Virginia is detached houses with basements, and a dry basement is close to the perfect room for a rabbit: stable temperature, no direct sun, and out of the traffic of the house without being isolated from it. Put the pen where people walk past it, not in the far corner.

The one local caution is well water. Rural West Virginia runs on it, it is usually fine, and a rabbit drinking heavily mineralised water can develop bladder sludge over time. If your water is hard, mention it to your vet at the first visit rather than waiting for a problem.

Keeping a Holland Lop in the Mid-Atlantic

A manageable climate at both ends, with humid Julys around the Bay and proper winters inland. The Mid-Atlantic point specific to this breed is housing: a great deal of the region is apartments and rowhouses, and a Holland Lop is the one of our four that genuinely suits that. It needs floor time rather than floor space.

Size. About 2 to 4 lb full grown, the smallest of the lop breeds. Care. A Holland Lop needs its coat checked rather than groomed: a weekly once-over for mats behind the ears and around the tail is the whole of it. Nails every four to six weeks. They are prone to dental trouble if the hay runs out, so unlimited timothy hay is not optional.

What it gets mistaken for. Most often confused with the Mini Lop, which is a different and noticeably heavier breed rather than a bigger Holland. If a seller uses the two names interchangeably, they are not paying attention. Everything about the Holland Lop.

Finding a rabbit vet in West Virginia

Do this before the rabbit arrives, not during an emergency. Rabbits are exotics to most practices, and a vet who sees them regularly is a different proposition from one who will. Ring round and ask directly how many rabbits they see in a month.

It matters more than the breed you pick. A Holland Lop with a good local vet does better than any rabbit without one.
