Getting a Holland Lop to Rhode Island

What this breed's size means for the journey. At 2 to 4 lb a Holland Lop travels in a compact carrier with room to turn round and stretch out, which is what you want for a journey of any length. Small enough that the carrier sits in the cab with us rather than in the back.

Holland Lops carry a dense enough coat that heat matters more than cold. Above about 80F they are uncomfortable and above 85F it becomes genuinely risky, which is why the southern runs go overnight.

Holland Lops in Rhode Island, specifically

Rhode Island is a small state at the end of a long road: a four-day run, with the last leg the shortest part of it.

The climate is straightforward for a Holland Lop. Coastal moderation means the winters are less severe than inland New England and the summers are humid for only a few weeks. Very little across the year needs active management.

The Rhode Island specific is the coastal damp, which is worth naming for a lopped breed in particular. A Holland's ear does not get the airflow an upright ear does, and persistent moisture over a long wet winter can encourage wax build-up and ear trouble that an upright-eared rabbit would shrug off. It is easy to stay ahead of and easy to miss: look inside both ears once a week, and act early on any build-up or head-shaking rather than watching it develop.

Ventilation is worth more than warmth here. A dry, airy room beats a warm stuffy one for this breed in this climate.

Providence is close enough to Boston that the best exotic veterinary care in the region is within reach, which is a real advantage.

Keeping a Holland Lop in New England

Cold is the least of a Holland Lop's problems and New England winters are a non-event for a rabbit indoors. What does matter is the length of the winter: five months of no outdoor time means the pen has to be big enough to be the whole world for a while, and boredom in a bored rabbit shows up as chewing.

Size. About 2 to 4 lb full grown, the smallest of the lop breeds. Care. A Holland Lop needs its coat checked rather than groomed: a weekly once-over for mats behind the ears and around the tail is the whole of it. Nails every four to six weeks. They are prone to dental trouble if the hay runs out, so unlimited timothy hay is not optional.

What it gets mistaken for. Most often confused with the Mini Lop, which is a different and noticeably heavier breed rather than a bigger Holland. If a seller uses the two names interchangeably, they are not paying attention. Everything about the Holland Lop.

Finding a rabbit vet in Rhode Island

Do this before the rabbit arrives, not during an emergency. Rabbits are exotics to most practices, and a vet who sees them regularly is a different proposition from one who will. Ring round and ask directly how many rabbits they see in a month.

It matters more than the breed you pick. A Holland Lop with a good local vet does better than any rabbit without one.
