Genotype aa bb C_ dd E_. Lilac is dilute chocolate, which means it needs both recessives at once: the chocolate gene and the dilution gene. That is why it is genuinely hard to produce rather than merely uncommon.
What a good one looks like
The pink cast should be present but subtle. A good lilac is unmistakably not blue, and holding one next to a blue is the fastest way to see the difference. Eyes are blue-grey with a faint ruby cast.
What to check for
Reading as a poor blue rather than a lilac. If the pink is not there, the colour is not doing what it should. Uneven shading across the saddle is the other common one.
Is lilac actually rare?
Genuinely uncommon, and one of the harder colours to produce cleanly. It requires two recessives to line up, and a lot of litters produce none. This is a colour worth waiting for rather than settling on something close.
