A opal Holland Lop sits in the agouti group. A blue-over-fawn agouti with a slate undercoat. The banded hair shafts give it real depth in sunlight, and it shifts noticeably depending on the light.

Moderately common. It appears regularly enough that you should not be paying a scarcity premium, though a genuinely well-marked example is another matter.

The genetics

Genotype A_ B_ C_ dd E_. Opal is dilute chestnut agouti. The banding structure is the same, but the black ticking becomes blue and the whole rabbit cools down.

What a good one looks like

The blue over fawn should be clearly readable, with a slate base. Good ring definition on the hair shaft, same as any agouti.

What to check for

Weak banding. A washed-out overall appearance where neither the blue nor the fawn is doing anything.

Is opal actually rare?

Uncommon, and one of the prettiest colours in the breed in natural light. It photographs poorly, which is probably why it is less requested than it deserves to be.

Is opal rare?

Uncommon, and less requested than it deserves to be. It photographs poorly, which is almost certainly why. In natural sunlight it is one of the prettiest colours in the breed.
