A lynx Holland Lop sits in the agouti group. A fawn and lilac agouti that reads almost pinkish-orange, over a pearl undercolour. Warm, soft, and quite unlike anything else in the breed.
Genuinely uncommon, and one of the colours people search for by name. If this is what you want, expect to wait for one rather than expecting to find one today.
The genetics
Genotype A_ bb C_ dd E_. Lynx is dilute chocolate agouti, which means it needs both the chocolate recessive and the dilution gene, same as lilac. That is why it is rare.
What a good one looks like
The pink cast over the fawn. The undercolour should be pearl rather than slate, which is the fastest way to distinguish a lynx from an opal.
What to check for
Reading as a poor opal. If the warmth is not there, the colour is not right.
Is lynx actually rare?
Rare, and genuinely difficult to produce. Two recessives have to line up. If a breeder has one they will know exactly what they have, and if they do not know, be sceptical about what you are actually being sold.
Common questions
How do I tell a lynx from an opal?
The undercolour. A lynx has a pearl undercolour and a pinkish warmth over the fawn. An opal has a slate undercolour and reads cooler. If the warmth is not there, it is not a lynx.
Why are lynx Holland Lops so rare?
Because they need both the chocolate recessive and the dilution gene to line up, exactly like lilac. If a breeder has one they will know precisely what they have, and if they do not know, be sceptical about what you are being sold.
